Getting someone out: $80–$180
Standard Sydney call-out for after-hours attendance. Ask before booking, not after the invoice.
The first thing that happens is not a booking. It is a plumber telling you what to shut off right now, because the minutes before anyone arrives are where most of the damage is either done or prevented.
Most of the value in an emergency call happens before anyone arrives. Knowing to shut the water off at the meter, knowing not to touch a light switch when there is a smell of gas, knowing to kill the power to a soaked area: each of those is worth more than the hour we save on the road.
So the call starts with instructions rather than a booking form. Then a crew is dispatched with the common failure points already on the van, because diagnosing from scratch at midnight is how a two-hour job becomes a two-visit one.
The newer apartments near Arncliffe station share sewer lines that slowly coat with fat and wet wipes, choking flow for every unit on the stack.
Before anything else, work out whether the failure sits inside your lot or on common property, because that decides who authorises the work and who is billed. As a rule of thumb: a fixture, a tap or pipework serving only your apartment is usually yours; a stack, a shared sewer line or a stormwater pit serving the building is usually the owners corporation's.
If it is after hours and the building manager is unreachable, we attend, make it safe, and write the report so it names the line and the lot. That report is what settles the invoice question later, and it is far easier to produce on the night than to reconstruct a fortnight afterwards.
Original earthenware gives way at the joints, and it rarely announces itself politely. Roots find the joint, the joint opens, and the section finally lets go on a night with the house full and one bathroom working.
Arncliffe lies in Sydney’s St George area (postcode 2205), its Federation cottages and newer units spread between the Princes Highway and the green Wolli Creek valley, bordered by Wolli Creek, Turrella, Bexley and Rockdale. Old clay pipes on sloping ground mean drain trouble is never far away.
Old pipe is not automatically bad pipe. But when a heritage-era line fails once, it is worth knowing whether you have had one bad joint or a tired run. We clear it, camera it before we leave, and you keep the footage — so any decision about relining is yours to make on evidence rather than on our word.
Around Arncliffe we work with premises where closing for a day is not a small inconvenience — it is the week's takings and a shift's wages.
So we work to the opening time, not to ours. That means arriving after close where that suits you better, telling you early if the fix will not hold until trade, and giving you the documentation your insurer or landlord will ask for afterwards.
Streets falling away toward the Wolli Creek valley and Eve Street wetlands carry huge runoff in storms, overwhelming older stormwater pits on the low side of the suburb.
On sloping ground the problem is rarely where the symptom is. Water leaves a failure at the highest point and surfaces at the lowest, which can be several properties away and well downhill of anything you would think to look at.
It is also why a neighbour's overflowing gully is sometimes your blocked line, and occasionally the reverse. We work uphill from the symptom rather than digging where the water appears.
The original clay lines under the cottages off Wollongong Road and Forest Road have spent a century shifting in Arncliffe’s soil, opening joints that snag waste and roots.
Clay drainage is laid in short lengths, so a single run has a great many joints, and after decades each one has opened a fraction. The line copes fine at normal flow and stops coping the moment demand spikes, which is why so many of these calls come on a weekend morning or after a full house has been showering.
Clearing restores flow the same night. Whether it holds depends on what the camera finds, and that is worth doing before the next long weekend rather than after it.
Stop using water anywhere in the house. Every flush, every sink and especially the washing machine adds to whatever is already sitting in the line, and a machine mid-cycle is the single most common way a slow backup becomes a floor to mop.
Mature figs, camphor laurels and backyard fruit trees across Arncliffe drive fine roots into any hairline crack, ballooning into blockages that only a jetter or root cutter will shift.
If there is an overflow gully outside and it is running, that is the system doing its job and keeping it out of the house. Leave it clear and let it work until we arrive.

Roughly $120–$160 in daylight. Someone is out of bed and on the road, and the rate reflects it.
Where most single-fault after-hours jobs land once attendance, labour and small parts are counted.
Slab leaks, gas line work, anything that means opening a wall overnight. You approve the figure first.
We would rather book you for Monday at daylight rates than take a premium for a job that was never urgent.
These are market ranges, not our quote. You hear your number first and decide with it in front of you. Figures here are indicative of the 2026 Sydney market rather than a quote from us, you get your own number as a fixed price before any work starts.
Call and describe it. If it can hold, we will tell you, and book you at daytime rates. If it cannot, you will be glad you rang tonight.
